The University provides access to a wide range of online databases across most subjects. These are some of the most useful for business students:

General packages

  • Business Source Complete selected full text for over 3,800 journals. It also provides financial data, books, case studies etc.
  • ProQuest Business package (ABI/INFORM Complete, Accounting & Tax, Banking Information Source, International Bibliography of the Social Sciences (IBSS), ProQuest Asian & Business Reference and ProQuest Entrepreneurship)
  • FT.com - the online version of the Financial Times newspaper and databases. First time users will need to log in via the A-Z list, then register (or sign up) - registering via the electronic library will connect you to the University's subscription, avoiding monthly limits or requests for payment.

Accounting and tax

  • IBFD Tax Research Platform - a comprehensive database of tax treaties, legislation, case law and commentary on national and international taxation. 

Company research

  • FAME - information for companies in the UK and Ireland.
  • GlobalData Explorer - Spanning all major industries and 120+ sub-sectors, GlobalData Explorer provides the key insights to effectively compare sectors and understand the market drivers shaping an industry. Access GlobalData's extensive database of company profiles, including financial data and SWOT analyses. Use the curated lists to see key industry players, or use the Company Screener tool to refine your search. 753K+ companies.
  • Orbis - standardised information for companies globally.
  • Perfect Information Navigator (Filings Expert) A financial and capital markets database providing access to over 14 million global company filings including annual reports, M&A (Mergers and Acquisitions), IPOs (Initial Public Offerings), bond prospectuses and news announcements.

Market research

  • GlobalData Explorer - Spanning all major industries and 120+ sub-sectors, GlobalData Explorer provides the key insights to effectively compare sectors and understand the market drivers shaping an industry. Access GlobalData's extensive database of company profiles, including financial data and SWOT analyses.   • Mintel - market information for the UK for the following streams: Drink, Retail: clothing and footwear, Technology, Leisure, Lifestyles, Travel

News databases

  • Factiva - a global news and business information service that combines the content sets of Dow Jones Interactive and Reuters Business Briefing.
  • Nexis UK (LexisNexis Butterworths) provides a comprehensive news, business and industry information service which is updated daily. It provides full text access to all UK national newspapers, regional newspapers, international news sources and a range of trade journals and magazines.  A large range of company, financial and industry information is also provided, such as company annual reports, company and director profiles and directories and market reports.

      Statistics

  • UK Data Service provides access to international datasets of macro and micro level statistics, produced by organisations such as the IMF, the World Bank and OECD. Individual user registration is required. Available both on and off the campus.
  • Eurostat (the Statistical Office of the European Communities) collects and publishes statistics from the member states and from other countries and international agencies for the information of EU institutions. The database includes online publications, datasets and data by sector. Free resource.
  • OECD iLibrary has the text of publications of the OECD (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development) as well as statistical datasets. Please note that our subscription has now lapsed

Bloomberg is an online service that provides analysis and quotes for worldwide equities and indices, current company, industry and market news, and worldwide economic data

Key datasets includes equities, money markets, currencies, municipals, corporate/Euro/sovereign bonds, indices, commodities, mortgage-backed securities and derivatives

Coverage

Delayed real-time daily information as well as historical data. Bloomberg Business News covers companies, industries and market with over 3,000 stories a day.

Access

Available in the Reuters Lab on the Bloomberg terminal PC. User name and password needed. You could find them on the label stuck on the monitor. Book before use

Standard & Poor’s Compustat provides fundamental company and market data on 65,000 securities, representing over 90 percent of the world’s total market capitalisation. the Business School currently subscribed Compustat data packages include: Compustat North America (U.S. and Canada), Compustat Global Vantage (International), Standard & Poor’s EMDB (Emerging Markets Database)

Coverage

Standard & Poor's Compustat North America and Global Vantage databases contain fundamental financial and price data for both active and inactive publicly traded companies. Compustat goes back annually to 1950, and Global Vantage goes back to 1993.

Standard & Poor's EMDB (Emerging Markets Database) includes market performance, indicators, market capitalization, monthly value traded, local stock market price indexes, and prices, etc., in local currency and U.S. dollars, back to 1995.

CRSP end-of-day and month-end prices on all listed NYSE, AMEX, and NASDAQ common stocks with basic market indices. CRSP provides the most comprehensive dividend information available, with the most accurate total return calculations

Coverage

Daily and monthly data on high, low, bid, ask and closing prices, trading volume, shares outstanding, capital appreciation, income, total return, year-end capitalization. Both daily and monthly stock data are currently available in the Business School.

Access

Available in the Reuters Lab on one PC. No password and username needed.

Datastream is a PC-based database that includes historical worldwide data on equities, company financials, stock market indices, unit and investment trusts, warrants, bonds, interest rates, exchange rates, commodities, and macroeconomic data

Coverage

Time series vary but some cover more than 50 years. Available frequencies include daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual. Data available on active and inactive companies

Access

Datastream is only available to postgraduate students and teaching staff. No password and user name is needed. Available in the Reuters Lab on two PCs. Book before use.

If Datastream in the Thomson Reuters lab does not work:

  1. Do not put the extranet password into Datastream otherwise it will lock the account for everyone.
  2. If Datastream does not log in people need to run the little program in the Fix Datastream folder called “fix datastream.exe”. This should put the correct username and password into the right places and copy over the data-files that are needed to run Datastream.

Eventus Software performs event studies that compute abnormal returns for specific corporate actions or events using data directly from CRSP (please link it with CRSP)

Eventus provides user control over estimation periods and cumulative return windows, a choice of raw, comparison period mean adjusted, market adjusted or market model abnormal returns. Simple statements allow the researcher to run a complete event study, from reading the CRSP stock database to print results, with a program as short of as four lines.

Coverage

U.S. data begins in 1976 and international data begins in 1987. Both detailed and consensus data is available. In 2000, I/B/E/S data was integrated with Thomson Financial’s First Call.

LSPD is a database provided by London Business School that contains monthly data on more than 9,000 UK shares, of which some 3,000 are currently live

Key data includes monthly stock prices as well as data on dividends, share capital, par values, general description and histories of name changes, sector membership, index membership, and risk measure. It also includes a large number of indices covering the sector levels, dividend yields, earning yields, international stock exchange indices, exchange rates, interest rates, economic indices and commodities

Coverage

LSPD provides biographical information for each firm listed on the London Stock Exchange since 1955, and comprehensive coverage since 1975

Access

Available on the dedicated computer in the Reuters Lab. Business School faculty, doctoral students, and visiting researchers can ask for the LSPD CD-ROM to be installed on to their own PC. Please contact the database support desk for further details.

Formerly Standard & Pool’s Micropal Workstation, this is a PC-based system designed for the presentation and analysis of collective investment fund data.

Key databases include information on stock markets, indices and foreign exchange rates, a full range of qualitative information on each fund (e.g. Fund Size, Bid/Offer Spread, Management Charge, Volatility).

Coverage

Time series go back over ten years and include over 30,000 funds and 2,000 indices.

Reminders

  • Only 1 person at a time can use the username and there are 6 more terminals in the Reuters lab.
  • Save your files to your own computer. Don't just leave them on the online server because if you log in with a different username and password you will not be able to see them and anyone else who logs in with the same username and password later will be able to see the work others have saved on the server.

Main Points of the Agreement

  • Only for students at the university doing academic work

Content

WRDS is an internet-based business data service provided by Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. WRDS holds a compilation of (up-to-date) historical data from some of the most comprehensive sources of financial, accounting, economic, management, marketing, banking, and insurance data for research.

Its particular strengths include deep archives of historical data, a common web interface for access to all WRDS databases, and a variety of output file formats. File formats include fixed-format, tab-delimited, comma-separated-values (csv), d-Base (dbf), SAS data sets and transport data sets, and HTML tables. WRDS also permits logons, via SSH, to its UNIX servers for direct analysis of data files with SAS, FORTRAN, or C.
