Liza is an environmental social scientist, working as a postdoctoral research fellow. She joins Exeter to work on the InBestSoil Horizon Europe/UKRI project, which studies the integration of soil health metrics into alternative agricultural business models. Her research also focuses on innovation systems and policy for alternative agricultural systems, particularly related to seed and breeding innovation. Prior to starting at Exeter, Liza was at the University of California Davis, where she conducted nationwide assessments of the organic seed system. In this work she combined innovation system theories with network analytical methods to better understand the structure and function of a developing niche innovation.

Research projects

Current research activity:

Liza’s current research agenda has two paths. First, with the InBestSoil team at Exeter and Wageningen University, they are developing business models that integrate soil health metrics to improve valuation of farming’s environmental impact. Her second line of work looks at the role of public-sector plant breeding innovation and its contributions to environmental and social outcomes. She works for collaborators at the US Department of Agriculture and the national non-profit Organic Seed Alliance to deepen our understanding of how innovation policy affects the trajectories of plant breeding innovation.

Prior to coming to Exeter, Liza taught introductory R programming courses, including ‘R for Data Analysis and Visualization’ and ‘Adventures in Data Science’. She also led a weekly R-Users Working Group, as well as several short-term workshops, teaching topics such as research project management, data wrangling, web scraping, text analysis, version control with git/GitHub, and website building, all in the R programming language.
