University of Exeter Business School

Your Future First

The University of Exeter’s Career Zone cares about your professional ambitions. We want to support you to achieve your career goals. We will help you to put Your Future First.

Did you know...?

  • Many UK graduate schemes open in September, receive thousands of applications, and close again before December.
  • UK graduate employers recruit for aptitude rather than academic ability and therefore seek evidence of your soft skills.
  • You can maximise your chances of being hired by taking advantage of extracurricular opportunities and internships alongside your studies at Exeter.

Your Future First is a unique induction course designed exclusively for master’s students in the Business School. In Your Future First you will discover some key concepts that will prepare you for the highly competitive world of work. Whether your plan is to stay in the UK, return to your home country, or start a career in another part of the world, you will:

  • Learn what makes one student more likely to impress employers than another.
  • Explore how and when employers recruit postgraduates, so that you can be ready and prepared to apply.
  • Discover how to make the most of your time as a student, to make yourself more employable.
  • Understand the support available to you through the Career Zone and carry on your learning and development through the Master Your Future workshops that are delivered throughout the academic year.

Postgraduate study is academically challenging: your learning and assignments will take priority and leave less time for other activities. Your Future First allows you to spend some time focusing on your career plans early on, so that you can make the most of the Career Zone service and are familiar with opportunities available to you while you’re a student here.

Graduate opportunities at many large companies are advertised a year in advance, with applications opening as early as July and closing in the Autumn term. This means that if you want to join a large organisation on one of their graduate programmes when you finish your course, you need to know how to write high-quality applications and submit them straight away.

Lots of things that help you to develop your career happen from the start of your studies – such as Careers fairs, opportunities to meet employers, extra-curricular opportunities, and various ways to build your experiences so you can demonstrate the skills and qualities that employers value.

You can work through Your Future First at your own pace, it should take around 3-4 hours to complete.

All eligible offer-holders will receive emails in August/September with instructions on how to access the course pre-arrival. This email will include your login details, so please check your inbox during this period.
