Overview

Mario Du Preez is a South African by origin. He holds a DCom in Economics from the University of Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Before joining the University of Exeter Business School (UEBS), he was a Professor of Economics at the Nelson Mandela University (previously known as the University of Port Elizabeth), where he taught under- and postgraduate Economics modules for 21 years.

Apart from his teaching, Mario has also published numerous, peer-reviewed journal articles on Environmental and Natural Resource Economics-related themes. Some of the journals include Ecological Economics, Journal of Environmental Planning and Management, WaterSA, Development Southern Africa, South African Journal of Industrial Engineering, Journal of Energy in Southern Africa, Journal of Real Estate Literature, Journal of Outdoor Recreation and Tourism, African Development Review, and the South African Journal of Economics.

Mario and his family emigrated to the United Kingdom in 2017. Since 2018, he has provided part-time teaching assistance at the UEBS on the following modules, namely Economic Issues, Theory and Practice, International Economics, Policy Issues in the Global Economy, History of Economic Thought, Managerial Economics, and Ethics and Economics.

Mario joined the Economics Department on a more permanent basis as a Lecturer in September 2023. Currently, Mario’s research interests are dominated by so-called heterodox topics viz. Ecological Economics, Buddhist Economics, and Complexity Economics.

In his spare time, Mario is an avid trout fly fisher (he is a qualified casting instructor and guide), enjoys tenpin bowling with his family, studies Taoism, and dabbles in creating fine art.
