Module Selection FAQs & Info

We know that choosing your modules can seem like an overwhelming task so we have put together some information based on questions we are regularly asked by students.

If you can't find the answer you are looking for below, please email info.buildingone@exeter.ac.uk

What is a compulsory module and what is an optional module?

Compulsory modules are modules you MUST take

Optional modules are modules you can CHOOSE to take

What is a condonable module and what is a non-condonable module?

If a module is condonable, it means that if you fail it but fail no more than 30 credits worth of condonable modules and have an average for the year of 40%+, you can still progress to the next academic stage.

If a module is non condonable this means that you MUST pass it in order to progress on your current programme.

What is a pre-requisite?

A pre-requisite is a module you must have taken before you can take this module e.g. to take BEA2010 you must have taken BEA1013 as a pre-requisite.

What is a co-requisite?

A co-requisite is a module that you must be taking at the same time as another module e.g. BEA2019 and BEA2020 are co-requisites.

What is a non-requisite?

A non-requisite is a module that you cannot take with another module e.g. You cannot take BEA2017 if you have taken BEA2010.

How many credits do I need to take?

You need to take a total of 120 credits worth of modules. We highly encourage all students to spread their modules evenly across both terms e.g. 60 credits in Term 1 and 60 credits in Term 2. You can choose to do an uneven split such as 45 credits in one term and 75 credits in the other, but this will mean more workload in one term.

Can I change my modules?

If your plans change, you can change your modules in September at the start of term. This is called Module Change. For more information on module change please see this link: Module change | Student hubs | University of Exeter

Please note, modules may not have spaces available in module change.

Can I select modules from the year below?

If your programme permits it, you can take up to 30 credits from the year below. Some modules from the year below will be available to you in OMS if they allow you to complete a proficiency, otherwise these can be selected only through module change in September & January.

What is modularity?

Modularity means you may take up to 30 credits each year outside of the Business School e.g. Law. If you are interested in taking a module from outside your course or programme of study, you should first discuss this with the College who runs the module.

What is a proficiency?

If your programme permits it, you may be able to take 60 credits worth of modules that means you are entitled to add the words ‘with proficiency in’ to your degree title when you graduate. For example, you may wish to add a proficiency in a Language or Data Science.

What is a minor?

If your programme permits it, you may be able to take 60 credits worth of modules from a different subject area. Minors are designed to help you align your studies around your interests and future goals, your pathway is formally recognised on your degree certificate: for example, BSc Business with a Minor in Sustainable Solutions.
