Applied Microeconomics

The Applied Microeconomics group at the University of Exeter boasts over 20 talented researchers, led by Professor Climent Quintana-Domeque. With academic backgrounds spanning the globe— including 38% from the UK, 33% from the USA, and 19% from Continental Europe—this eclectic group of scholars works on a broad spectrum of fields, including development, health, labour, microeconometrics, political economy, public economics, and trade. We explore a myriad of topics, such as crime, culture, discrimination, education, family, inequality, mental health, market design, poverty, and tax evasion.

Our dedicated research group employs diverse quantitative methods, utilizing design-based and model-based approaches with data from global sources. Our research is showcased in top-tier journals including renowned titles such as the American Economic Review and the Journal of Development Economics. Notably, our work has received funding from esteemed entities like the British Academy and the National Science Foundation.

Engagement in education is a key facet of our group's activities. We offer a wide spectrum of modules for both undergraduate and postgraduate students, covering topics ranging from Applied Econometrics to Data Science in Economics. Furthermore, our researchers hold influential editorial positions in respected journals, including CESifo Economic Studies and Economics & Human Biology, enriching our contribution to economic dialogue.

Collectively, our endeavors position the University of Exeter at the forefront of contemporary microeconomic research.
