Your Future First

The University of Exeter’s Career Zone cares about your professional ambitions. We want to support you to achieve your career goals. We will help you to put Your Future First.

Why are you studying a Master's programme?

As part of your plan to get a better job? A higher salary? To earn the respect of others? To pursue an exciting and rewarding career?

If any of these are the reason, then the Your Future First careers course is for you!

We often hear graduates say the following things

My masters flew by! A year went so quickly. I can’t believe how much I’ve learnt in such a short time.

I wish I’d been more prepared for my job hunt. I didn’t know enough about graduate jobs in the UK and didn’t start thinking about my next steps until near the end of my course. By then I had missed many opportunities. I regret not starting earlier.

There is no doubt that postgraduate study is academically challenging. Your learning and assignments will take priority and leave less time for other things. So why not focus on your career early on?

Your Future First is a unique learning experience designed exclusively for postgraduate students at the Business School. Your Future First is not a standard business course on finding jobs, writing job applications and practising interview techniques. Instead, you will discover some key concepts that will prepare you for the highly competitive world of work. Whether your plan is to stay in the UK, return to your home country, or start a career in another part of the world, you will:

  • Learn what makes one student more likely to impress employers than another.
  • Explore how and when employers recruit postgraduates, so that you can be ready and prepared to apply.
  • Discover how to make the most of your time as a student, to make yourself more employable.

We have designed Your Future First for you to access as soon as you have your Exeter IT account details. You will work through it at your own pace, it should take around 6 hours to complete.

Further information on how to access the course via MyCareerZone Digital will be sent by email from the Admissions team. Please look out for this email in September.

If you have any queries at all, please do not hesitate to contact our team in the Business School via business-school-careers@exeter.ac.uk.

Did you know...?

  • Many UK graduate schemes open in September, receive thousands of applications, and close again before December.
  • UK graduate employers recruit for aptitude rather than academic ability and therefore seek evidence of your soft skills.
  • You can maximise your chances of being hired by taking advantage of extracurricular opportunities and internships alongside your studies at Exeter.
