Module description
This non-credit bearing compulsory module will help you prepare for your Year 3 placement abroad as part of the ‘with Year Abroad’ degree programme. You will be guided through the institution application processes and be provided with general preparation for study and, if applicable, work abroad. You will begin to develop intercultural communication skills and will be encouraged to begin to frame your experience in the wider context of employability and personal development.
By the end of the module:
• if you choose to study abroad, you will be allocated to your host institution, having completed all the relevant host application paperwork and understood the implications of your year abroad.
• if you choose to work abroad, you will need to confirm a work placement outside of UK.

Internationalisation
This module is designed to prepare you for your time studying abroad, which will give you an international study experience. You are normally expected to take a language course if you intend to go to a non-English speaking country.
Sustainability
All of the information about studying abroad is on the ELE (Exeter Learning Environment).
External Engagement
You will engage extensively with the partner institution where you will undertake your study placement.
Employability
You will acquire a number of valuable skills including adaptability, team-working, language abilities, and intercultural skills. Those who you who undertake a one semester work placement will also gain practical employability experience and develop your professional skills in an international setting.

Syllabus plan
You will research and apply internally for your preferred host institution by a specific date in Term 1. Host institution allocation is a competitive selection process and you will be required to provide a rationale in support of your choice of host institution, either in writing or verbally as agreed by the Module Convenor. Host institution allocations are typically published at the beginning of Term 2.
In Term 2 you will formally apply to your allocated host institution and confirm your study plan for the year abroad. If you are seeking a semester or year-long work abroad placement, you will need to comply with relevant School procedures.
Advice will be given through the module handbook, WYA ELE page and on an individual student basis.

In Term 3 you will need to attend a pre-departure briefing session (2 hours, timetabled)
Additional sessions may be offered by the Global Opportunities Team and will be advertised in advance.

Re-assessment notes
This module is not formally assessed and does not bear any credits, however it is possible to fail this module.?Students are required to attend all compulsory sessions, achieve (in Year 1) and maintain (in Year 2) a good academic average (50% for European institutions or work abroad placement, and 60% for non-European institutions).?Those students who fail to meet the requirements of the course without due cause will be transferred back to the three-year degree.
