Scholarships and funding for Masters programmes

At the University of Exeter Business School, we want to ensure studying for a Masters remains accessible to the brightest minds of the future, regardless of financial background. 

We therefore have £1 million in postgraduate scholarships available. We are offering every student a Future Leaders Scholarships worth £1,000 each. These will be automatically awarded to students who confirm their place within the deposit deadline outlined in their offer letter.

Specific scholarships are as follows:

Merit-based Scholarships

Up to ten scholarships covering full fees and maintenance award are available for exceptional students to study our two year MRes Economics (Pathway to PhD) programme for 2019 entry with progression to our PhD in Economics.

Funding will cover up to five years of full tuition fees and a maintenance award and includes:

  • Year one - two: Full fees for the MRes Economics (Pathway to PhD) programme and annual maintenance award set at the National Doctoral Stipend (for 2019/20 this is  £15,009).   
  • Years three – five: Full fees for PhD Management programme and annual maintenance award set at the National Doctoral Stipend (for 2019/20 this is £15,009*). (This funding is subject to successful completion of the MRes programme and subject to meeting the standard PhD entry criteria).

The scholarships are competitive and require you to have a First-Class honours degree or a Merit in a MA/MSc, or equivalent, in Economics or closely related subject with evidence of excellent mathematical ability. Candidates with strong background in mathematics and quantitative disciplines are encouraged to apply. If English is not your first language, you will also be required to have and English language level of IELTS 6.5 with no section less than 6.0, or equivalent.

How to apply

In order to be considered for this scholarship you will need to complete an application for the MRes programme.  In addition, you will need to summit a personal statement outlining the following by 31 July 2019:

  • Why you are applying for this programme and your expectations on what you will achieve
  • Your research interests and how you expect they will be developed through this programme
  • An example piece of written work (preferably coursework submitted for any previous degrees) (to be uploaded under research proposal section)
  • GMAT/GRE test is optional but score may strengthen the case for funding – not more than 3 years old.

The scholarships are competitive and require you to have at least a 2:1 Honours degree or equivalent in management, social sciences or related areas. Experience in quantitative and/or qualitative research methods is desirable. If English is not your first language, you will also be required to have and English language level of IELTS 6.5 with no section less than 6.0, or equivalent.

Postgraduate Global Excellence Scholarships are worth £5000 payable as a reduction on the first year International tuition fees.
Scholarships are available as follows:

There are an unlimited number of £5000 awards for international applicants to any Business School masters programme who achieve the equivalent of a UK first class Bachelor degree.

40 x £5000 awards are available to international applicants for MSc Financial Analysis and Fund Management MSc International ManagementMSc Economics, MSc Economics and Econometrics or MSc Behavioural Economics and Finance who achieve the equivalent of a UK upper second class Bachelor degree. This award will be automatically allocated to outstanding applicants applying for the first time for 2019 entry (deferred offer holders or applicants applying for deferred entry are not eligible).

A separate application for this scholarship is not required, scholarships will be offered on a rolling basis until the 30th June 2019. If you are offered a Postgraduate Global Excellence Scholarship you will receive an e-mail notification following receipt of your University offer. If successful, to accept the award you must make the University of Exeter offer your first choice by returning your deposit by the deadline identified in your offer letter. Awardees will be required to satisfy any academic requirements stipulated in their offer letter no later than 31 August 2019.

A limited number of full and partial tuition fee scholarships will be awarded to the most talented students who have had an application accepted to one of the Business School MSc programmes.

The scholarships are competitive and require you to have an English language level of IELTS 7.0 with no section less than 6.0, or equivalent, if from a non-anglophone country. You will also need to submit an application form with a 1500 word essay on a topic dependent on your intended programme of study.

Ten scholarships of £10,000 will be awarded to the most talented students from India who have had an application accepted to one of the Business School MSc programmes for September 2019.

The scholarships are competitive and require you to have an English language level of IELTS 7.0 with no section less than 6.0, or equivalent, and submit an application form with a personal statement of up to 500 words outlining your academic interests, any prior relevant experience and reasons for choosing the University of Exeter and your programme of study.

Students must be graduates of a recognised university in, and be a resident of India. All scholarship awards are conditional on payment of the tuition fee deposit as specified in your offer letter and registration with the University of Exeter. How to apply

Closed: Scholarships are offered on a rolling basis but all applications must have been received by the 30th June 2019. Applicants will be notified of the outcome within one calendar month and by no later than 31 July 2019.

Two full fees scholarships are available to students who have had an application accepted to one of the Business School MSc programmes or the Exeter MBA programme for September 2019 entry. These will be awarded to an academically gifted candidate resident in the UK and continental Europe, who would not be able to study without this financial assistance.

This scholarship is funded by donations from a Business School alumnus.

To support budding entrepreneurs looking to study on our new MSc Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management programme, we are offering multiple awards from full tuition to part fee scholarships, as outlined below:

1) Accelerator: 1 x full fees

2) Purpose Driven: 1 x £10,000 towards fees

3) Breakthrough: 5 x £5,000 towards fees

Applicants need not have applied for the degree prior to applying for the scholarship, however only those applicants deemed eligible for entry to the MSc Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management programme for 2019 entry are eligible to be awarded the scholarship.

How to apply

There are four steps in this scholarship process as outlined below:

1. Complete the scholarship application
Applications closed on the 26th April 2019.

2. Attend an online masterclass
Eligible applicants will be invited to an online Masterclass between the 6th and 10th May.

3. Tell us why you want to study on the programme
Following the Masterclass, all applicants will be invited to send through a statement or video telling us a little bit more about your chosen venture, why you want to study on the programme and how it will benefit your future career ambitions.

4. Pitch your business idea to our faculty panel
Shortlisted applicants will be invited to pitch in front of a panel either online or in person on the 19th June.

This award is not recurrent for postgraduate research students.
