Overview

Dr Stuart So is a Lecturer in Environmental Analytics and the Programme Director for both BSc Business Analytics and MSc Business Analytics at the University of Exeter Business School. He received his doctorate from Macquarie University and completed his fellowship at the City University of Hong Kong. Stuart has published more than 50 research articles in major peer-reviewed journals and conferences (Stuart So - Google Scholar). He received two best paper awards and a research acknowledgement prize from the IEEE Conference, ANZAM Conference, and University of Melbourne respectively. His research includes operations, supply chain and information management focusing on supply chain and operations sustainability, renewable energy, life cycle assessment and circular economy and climate mitigation. Stuart also pursues data science research with a particular interest in AI/ML, NLP, recommendation systems and time-series analysis. 

Stuart teaches environmental analytics, operations analytics, business projects and dissertations. In Hong Kong, Stuart taught MIS at the University of Hong Kong and Business Sustainability at Hong Kong Baptist University. On the other hand, He conducted research at the City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Polytechnic University and The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong. Stuart previously taught at the University of Melbourne and the University of Queensland in Australia. 

Stuart is an editorial board member of the International Journal of Systems and Service-Oriented Engineering (IGI Global) and Library: High-Tech (Emerald). Stuart has been the Guest Editor for Sustainability (MDPI) and Library: High-Tech (Emerald), and the Book Editor for InTech Open.

Professionally, Stuart provided consulting on supply chain decarbonization, life cycle assessment, and lean management. He holds a Certified Carbon Auditor (CCA) qualification from the Energy Institute (UK) and a Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) from ISACA (USA). He is also an IRCA-certified ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems (EMS) Auditor and ISO22000 Food Safety Management Systems (FSMS) Internal Auditor. Last but not least, Stuart is a certified PRINCE 2 practitioner.

Research projects

Stuart is working on academic projects with a special focus on the application of artifical intelligence, machine learning and business analytics to operations and supply chain sustainability, climate mitigation and business management with several working papers in the pipeline.

Stuart is a member of the P3394 Standard for Large Language Model (LLM) Agent Interface Project of the IEEE Artificial Intelligence Standards Committee. The P3394 standard defines natural language interfaces that facilitate communication between LLM applications, agents, and human users. The standard defines a set of protocols and guidelines that enable applications and agents to effectively communicate with LLM-enabled Agents.

Teaching

Stuart is the Programme Director for BSc & MSc Business Analytics. His teaching interests cover a wide range of subjects in the business school with a specific focus on MIS and sustainability. Stuart taught Sustainable Community & Government at Hong Kong Baptist University and taught MIS, Capstone Projects, and Research Methods at the University of Hong Kong. He was a project instructor at the Hang Seng University of Hong Kong guiding students’ Final Year Projects (FYPs) in clean energy adoption and circular economy. Back in Australia, Stuart taught Operations Management and Project Management.
