Exploring the Role of Potential Knowledge Sources for the Fuzzy-Frond end of the New Product Development (NPD)---Bridging the Knowledge Gaps
This study was initiated by investigating the fact that despite the growing literature on external knowledge being important for bridging the knowledge gap across the new product development (NPD) processes, gaps exist to explore as to what are the potential knowledge sources and their role for the FFE-fuzzy-front-end (i.e. idea-generation) phase of the NPD process? in order to explore this, this research study was designed with an objective to examine the phenomena from the lenses of NPD managers in large firms who appeared to be frequently involved in NPD projects in the Chemicals and Electronics industries. To gain an in-depth understanding on the subject, forty-five open-ended interviews have been conducted to collect the data following thematic analysis into NVIvo 12. The results reveal customers, suppliers, and external research organizations are the potential knowledge sources. Each of the sources deliver distinct knowledge for FFE of the NPD process. Drawing from the knowledge-based view, open innovation literature and empirical analysis of this study, the findings demonstrate that each of the potential knowledge sources though bridges the knowledge gap that innovative firms seek for the FFE of the NPD process, however collaboration with such sources incurs significant costs, risks, resources, capabilities, and management practices which differs noticeably among different kinds of knowledge sources. Hence, managers must need assessing not just the gains but also the pains associated with each of the knowledge source before deciding to make additional investments in terms of resources and capabilities dedicated to learning from them while considering any of. these for the FFE

Abstract:
Developing firm capabilities to utilise social media for the fuzzy front end of innovation
Despite the growing importance of using social media to leverage external knowledge for new product development (NPD) in innovation, few studies have examined firm capabilities that underpin this knowledge acquisition route. This paper provides an empirical examination of firm capabilities that leverage external knowledge, utilising social media for the fuzzy-front-end (FFE) phase of the NPD process. With evidence from 27 interviews conducted with executives’ from large fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) firms, a thematic analysis using NVivo 12 is used to develop a conceptual framework capturing the key capabilities for using social media in the FFE. The findings reveal that the utilisation of social media is an ongoing process of experimenting with new technologies within the NPD phase of a firm’s innovation efforts. Hence, the results of the study suggest FMCG firms may consider developing the following capabilities to help effectively acquire external knowledge via social media: use staff specialised in social media for external knowledge identification; dedicate an independent department for social media knowledge acquisition; and encourage an open innovation culture.

Abstract:
Use of Social Media Applications for Supporting New Product Development Processes in Multinational Corporations
This paper examines the use of social media in new product development (NPD) processes. It is based on an in-depth study of multinational corporations (MNCs) around the world in the fast moving consuming goods (FMCG) sector. In order to obtain an in-depth understanding on the subject, a qualitative approach has been adopted to collect and analyse the data. The results suggest that social media can be viewed as an informal source for gaining an understanding of customers’ preferences, competitors’ activities, market trends and product feedback. Drawing from the literature and our empirical analysis, we ascertain that the use of social media platforms as a source for providing information for new product projects does not constitute a formal part of MNCs’ new product development processes. MNCs rely on their own trusted and dedicated research and development (R & D) institutes instead to support new product projects. The study concludes with practical guidelines for NPD managers.
