Overview

Alex joined the University in 2009. Prior to this he gained over 20 years’ management experience in both the public and private sectors. His commercial career included working in a range of diverse industries from antiques, tourism and electronics, to telecoms, trade exhibitions and education. He has worked in senior management roles and at board level in both an interim and permanent capacity for much of his career.

Alex has trained and coached hundreds of marketers and managers working for organisations, from small charities to FTSE 100 companies, including; American Express, Astra Zeneca, Burberry, BT plc, Corus, Cadbury, Dominos, KPMG, Microsoft, RNIB, Royal Bank of Canada, Siemens, Tate Gallery, Twentieth Century Fox, Wrigley, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals and Xerox.

Before joining the Business School, Alex also taught marketing at Plymouth University and more recently, was an Associate Lecturer on both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes with the Open University.

Research projects

Alex is currently working on a doctoral thesis investigating the use of wikis and peer evaluation to assess group work carried out by multi-national teams on a large-scale postgraduate strategy module

He is also the lead European investigator for a project looking at best practices in the design of online and hybrid courses in university business & management programs. The study is part-funded by McGraw-Hill education and findings from the pilot survey have been presented at the Academy of Management 2016 Annual Conference in the US and formed the basis of one of the Professional Development Workshops at the British Academy of Management conference in 2016.
