Konstantinos Chalvatzis has joined the Faculty of Environment, Science and Economy in 2024 as the Faculty Pro-Vice Chancellor for Business Engagement and Innovation.

Professor Chalvatzis joined the University of Exeter from the University of East Anglia (2010-23) where he was the inaugural Director of ClimateUEA (2019-23), leading the University’s largest interdisciplinary research theme. He was also the Associate Dean in the Faculty of Social Sciences (2018-23), responsible for the innovation and impact portfolios.

Before joining academia he has led energy engineering projects across Eastern Europe, MENA and the Caucasus regions.

Konstantinos has had academic roles as Chair of Sustainable Energy Business (2017-23) and earlier Associate and Assistant Professor in Business and Climate Change (2010-17). His research focuses on energy sector innovation, early stage financing ventures; corporate and sustainability and goverance. Research

Research interests

Professor Chalvatzis' research is challenge-driven and contributes to current industrial policy and management debates. Understanding that real world problems are not confined to academic disciplines Konstantinos has been trained as an interdisciplinary researcher, looking into issues of corporate sustainability and governance, energy and climate policy and energy sector innovation.

He has provided policy reviews for the IPCC WGIII, EU Commission (DG Energy, DG CLIMA and DG COMP) and IRENA. Konstantinos has been contracted to review for numerous research funders including within the EU Commission, the Irish Research Council and UKRI. He has also provided occassional manuscript reviews for over 50 academic journals.

Professor Chalvatzis has supervised 12 PhD candidates to a timely completion and has supported them to successful careers in research intensive universities and senior advisory roles.

If you are thinking of studying for a PhD in my areas of expertise and you would like to discuss your research ideas please email me.

Research projects

As Principal Investigator Professor Chalvatzis' projects have received funding of approximately £22m.

CIRCLE project (€5.5m; 2020-2023; EU INTERREG FCE) developed and applied circular economy models for the development of sustainable concrete and cement; arguably one of the most difficult to decarbonise industrial sectors. Professor Chalvatzis' research contributed to advanced business models and in-depth understanding of financing of sustainability innovations.

Intelligent Community Energy (ICE) project (€8m; 2016-2023; EU INTERREG FCE) explored the role of energy communities in promoting energy innovation and economic development for remote and isolated regions. Professor Chalvatzis' research has advanced state-of-the-art methods for user engagement with technology and analytical tools for low carbon energy policy evaluation.

TILOS project (€15m; 2014-2019; EU DG Energy) led to the first renewable energy island in the Mediterranean Sea and included the integration of a number of advanced technologies such as batteries and demand side management tools. Professor Chalvatzis' research tested new methods for population engagement with energy infrastructure design and implementation, put forward industry-leading, profitable business models for complex energy technologies and changed the regulatory framework for energy in Greece.

Konstantinos has also contributed, as Co-I, to the Aurora Alliance (an EU Funded partnership of European Universities aiming to jointly advance their curriculums sustainability training, societal impact and community engagement). He has also been Co-I with the Leverhulme Doctoral Scholars programme on the Critical Decade for Climate Change.

Professor Chalvatzis has led numerous smaller grants funded by UKRI, The British Council and industry sources.
