Professor Konstantinos Chalvatzis joined the University of Exeter in 2024 as Associate Pro-Vice Chancellor for Business Engagement and Innovation. In this strategic leadership role, he oversees the Faculty’s diverse portfolio of external partnerships for contract research, consultancy, professional education, research infrastructure, and IP commercialisation.
Prior to joining Exeter, Professor Chalvatzis was at the University of East Anglia (2010–2023), where he served as the inaugural Director of ClimateUEA (2019–2023), leading UEA’s largest interdisciplinary research theme. He was also Associate Dean for Innovation and Impact in the Faculty of Social Sciences (2018–2023).
His research lies at the intersection of energy sector innovation, energy markets, early-stage venture financing, and corporate sustainability and governance. His work has attracted over £22 million in funding from the EU, UK Government, industry, and corporate partners.
Professor Chalvatzis holds visiting appointments at ESCP Business School (Paris) and the University of Bologna’s School of Economics, Management and Statistics. He has previously been a visiting scholar at the Department of Geographical Sciences, University of Maryland, College Park.
Before transitioning to academia, he led major energy engineering projects across Eastern Europe, the MENA region, and the Caucasus.
He has provided expert policy reviews to the IPCC (Working Group III), the European Commission (DG Energy, DG CLIMA, DG COMP), and IRENA. He regularly reviews for major funding agencies including the European Commission, UKRI, the Irish Research Council, and the Israel Science Foundation. He has also peer-reviewed manuscripts for over 50 academic journals.
Professor Chalvatzis has supervised 12 PhD candidates to a timely completion and has supported them to successful careers in research intensive universities and senior advisory roles.
