Dr Joseph Kimaro

Dr Joseph Kimaro is a Lecturer in Sustainable Entrepreneurship and Management at the University of Exeter Business School. His research examines how businesses respond to environmental and social challenges in different institutional settings.

His work spans international business, supply chains, tourism, social entrepreneurship and low-carbon transitions. He is particularly interested in how responsibility, risk and value are distributed between firms, communities and governments, especially where resources are uneven and sustainability ambitions sit alongside competing development priorities.

Much of Joseph’s research is rooted in African economies and communities, while contributing to wider debates on sustainable business and inclusive development. His work includes sustainable procurement and supply chains, circular business models, tourism and social enterprise, responsible innovation, and emerging climate solutions.

Joseph is Tanzania Lead for the Enhanced Weathering Africa Partnership (EWAP), a multidisciplinary initiative advancing locally led research on enhanced rock weathering. He works with the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology, researchers, farmers, public institutions, agricultural and environmental stakeholders, and climate-innovation partners. The work considers carbon removal, soil health, agricultural livelihoods, climate resilience and the role of smallholder farmers in emerging climate interventions.

He also contributes to research and knowledge exchange with businesses, public-sector organisations and community partners. His work pays attention to the relationships and power arrangements that influence how initiatives are designed and experienced.

Before joining Exeter in May 2024, Joseph held academic posts at Solent University. He holds a PhD in Business Studies and Management from the University of Southampton and an MSc in International Transport and Logistics from the University of Dar es Salaam Business School.
