Joanne Connell is an Associate Professor in Sustainability and Tourism, and Director of Postgraduate Research in the Department of Management. She joined the University of Exeter Business School in 2011. Specialising in the field of sustainable tourism, Joanne has extensive experience in tourism research and education, and has collaborated with external organisations on numerous projects. As an interdisciplinary academic, Joanne works at the interface of critical agendas such as inclusivity, sustainability, health and business engagement.

In addition to journal papers, Joanne's list of publications includes a range of books and edited collections, notably the internationally-acclaimed textbook Tourism: A Modern Synthesis, now in its 5th edition, and The Routledge Handbook of Events. She has co-edited a series of high-level reference works that provide a valuable synthesis of how sub-disciplines such as Event Tourism, Sustainable Tourism and Leisure have evolved. She is the Book Review Editor for the esteemed journal Tourism Management.

Joanne is a co-investigator on the £1.9m UKRI-funded project ENLIVEN in collaboration with the University of Exeter Medical School and the University of Hertfordshire, which explores the benefits of nature and the outdoors for older people with cognitive impairment and how business and organisations can improve their provision.
