Professor Greg Allen

Greg was appointed a Professor of Practice in July 2020. He supports and advises colleagues across the Business School, Medical School and University with 'real-world' Board level and governance experience to inform acdemic delivery/teaching and research. He is also active in external business engagement for the University.
He is a member of the Univeristy's strategic Mental Health and Well-Being Committee, representing the Business School. He is also a Professor on the Leading Now executive education programme, and he is a key speaker on the Professional Pathways (Charity & Development) Programme each summer.
He is an experienced CEO, chair, non-executive director/Trustee and advisor, with a career of over 30-years. His board and consutancy roles have spanned the commercial (plc), public, third and academic sectors, in addition to his experience as a senior civil servant. He has spent the last 20 years in board and executive roles across the health and care sector in the UK and internationally. He has overseen a range of research and policy initiatives linking business, start-ups, national policymakers and academia in the UK and overseas.
His expertise is in Board leadership and governance, finance, risk and assurance - notably in the charity sector. He is also professionally qualified as a teacher and HR/OD specialist, with particular interest in leadership agility in a VUCA world, the future of work, responsible leadership, digital transformation and the impact of business on the environment.
He is currently the Chief Executive of Devon Air Ambulance (Group) and a Board Trustee of the national Shaw Trust. He was a previous long standing trustee of both Hospiscare and Arthritis Action. Previous national charity CEO roles include Interim CEO of the Point of Care Foundation, Interim CEO of Blind Veterans UK and CEO of Future Care Capital, a 70-year old national health and care charity whose Royal Patron was HM Queen Elizabeth II. He was also CEO of the national Centre for Workforce Intelligence – a key research body for the government (part of a FTSE 250 plc), senior civil servant at the Department of Health, a national director of Nuffield Health and private banker at Coutts & Co.
In his early career, he qualified as a teacher and, after being commissioned at the Royal Military Adcademy Sandhurst, served in the UK and abroad as an Officer in the British Army Adjutant General’s Corps (Education & Training Services). He is a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD and a Fellow of the RSA.
