Leading Now: Tools for Successful Leadership in the 21st Century

The Leading Now programme equips leaders in the 21st century with research-driven insights and a unique framework for navigating complex challenges.

Leading Now: Tools for successful leadership in the 21st century is offered by the Exeter Centre for Leadership at the University of Exeter Business School. We proudly offer research-guided insights which go beyond the scope of traditional leadership education to address the new responsibilities and leadership challenges of the 21st century.

Our programme offers aspiring, new and existing leaders the opportunity to develop their knowledge and seek new perspectives from our ‘4P’ (Performance, People, Progress, Principle) model for leadership. By joining the programme, participants build a deep understanding of their own leadership behaviours, personal values and vision, allowing them to navigate a changing and complex work environment with confidence and authenticity.

The University of Exeter Business School

Our world-leading research has real impact in tackling our society’s greatest challenges, across our core themes of Environmental Sustainability, Responsible Leadership and Technological Transformation.

Participants acquire a toolkit of approaches to help apply new knowledge in the workplace, enabling them to:

  • Take a global outlook on issues relevant to leadership in the 21st century, navigating the complexity and uncertainty of today’s business environment
  • Balance stakeholder demands across current and future challenges including sustainability, inclusivity, and technological disruption
  • Attract and retain a diverse, multi-generational workforce.

After the programme, participants will be able to:

  • Lead and develop high-performing teams
  • Apply creativity and ethical perspectives to complex problems, finding solutions which benefit all stakeholders
  • Set goals which promote team member accountability
  • Foster an inclusive culture, encouraging diversity and well-being
  • Reflect on their leadership for enhanced personal effectiveness and leadership growth.

We also recognise that leadership skills must evolve over time, as social, political, economic and technological themes emerge and develop. The skills needed now might not be required in the future, and our programme provides participants with tools to support their continued growth and development in an increasingly unpredictable world.

This 5-week programme is taught through a mix of face-to-face and online learning.

Networking and peer-to-peer learning are a vital component of our leadership programme, so we begin and end the programme with a face-to-face day at our Streatham Campus in Exeter. All other contact time is online, delivered through a combination of pre-recorded webinars and live online seminars, which give participants the opportunity to reflect on their learning and how to apply it in their workplace.

Webinars are delivered by experts in their field, whilst seminars are facilitated by coaches and encourage peer-to-peer learning. Participants have an individual coaching session at the start of the programme, and have access to TEXL, our platform for self-guided reflective learning throughout and after the programme.

Outside of the face-to-face sessions, participants should expect to spend up to 6 hours each week on learning activities. Of this, 1-2 hours will be ‘live’; the remainder can be worked through at the participants own pace.

A certificate of completion will be awarded at the end of the programme.

Leading Now: Tools for successful leadership in the 21st century is a 4-week programme primarily aimed at experienced or aspiring managers and leaders.
