I am the departmental Director for Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity, having previously been the Widening Participation Academic Lead. I regard this as a critical role, as we need to ensure that our teaching and learning spaces provide a home for all. I also lead the Finance and Accounting pedagogy seminar and research group for Education and Scholarship colleagues.
I am a Senior Lecturer in Finance and Accounting, with a focus of teaching the first year Financial Accounting and business and management Accounting cohorts. Having taught Financial Accounting to first year students for more than twenty years, I was previously nominated for the Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award for these engagements.
My doctoral study was a qualitative investigation into what helped and what hindered students in their journey through a four-year professional accounting programme at a specific institution. This research provided many insights into the importance of creating an environment that facilitates learning for students. It also highlighted the importance of trying to understand what it is that students struggle with in their attempts to gain an understanding of the disciplines principles and standards.
This research, underpinned by the principle of social justice, provided insights into the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion challenges that staff and students encounter at Higher Education Institutions and continues to inform and guide my research insterests and provide a solid foundation for my roles as EDI Director and E&S pedagogy focussed seminar and research lead.
I have also taught on the Help 2 Grow Executive Education Series for the University of Exeter.
