Overview

Tausif Bordoloi is Lecturer in Innovation and Circular Economy at the University of Exeter Business School. He joined the School in September 2022.

Tausif’s research is interdisciplinary and explores questions on current and emerging technologies and concepts (such as Cyber-Physical Systems and Technological Convergence) through the lens of innovation adoption, economic growth and industrial policy in UK and global manufacturing industries. Tausif also teaches bachelor- and master-level courses in innovation management, innovation policy, entrepreneurship and circular economy.

Tausif obtained his PhD thesis – entitled “Technological Convergence in Manufacturing: Research, Adoption and Policy” – from the University of Manchester in 2022. In his doctoral research, Tausif used both quantitative (text mining, scientometrics and survey) and qualitative techniques (case study interviews) to investigate the R&D and adoption of, and regional and policy influences on Cyber-Physical Systems in manufacturing. Outputs from his doctoral research have been published as scholarly articles in Technological Forecasting and Social Change.

Tausif is a biochemist by training. Prior to his PhD, Tausif held strategy, innovation and finance roles in biotechnology and automotive multinationals in Asia and Europe. He was a Chevening Scholar during his MBA at the University of Exeter Business School (2015-16 – graduated with distinction).

Tausif has recently become interested in the manufacturing sector’s turn towards decarbonisation and sustainable practices, and in the emergence of novel technologies at the intersection of engineering and biology. He is curious both about how sustainability transitions might be achieved in manufacturing and with what implications for responsible research.

Research interests

Tausif’s research interests are threefold: (a) Innovation management and policy, encompassing organisational, institutional and policy challenges in the development and adoption of emerging technologies; (b) Sustainability transitions, examining how technological and non-technological factors might accelerate a shift toward zero or low carbon manufacturing; and (c) Responsible research and innovation, aiming to understand how ethically responsible perspectives align (or don’t align) with Engineering Biology (the application of engineering principles to design/redesign living cells to e.g., enable low carbon manufacturing of chemicals).

Research projects

Tausif is currently preparing to submit articles to Technological Forecasting and Social Change (research comparing the design and implementation of industrial policies in the US, UK and Germany to accelerate the deployment of technology systems in manufacturing) Industrial and Corporate Change (research examining the tensions between two contrasting production paradigms: Industry 4.0 and Post-Automation).

Teaching

Tausif values fostering curiosity in the classroom by integrating research into teaching. He contributes to the teaching activities of the Business School’s Centre for Entrepreneurship, delivering tutorials on the two undergraduate modules – BEMM3060 (Managing Entrepreneurially) and BEMM2036 (Thinking Entrepreneurially).

Tausif has conceptualised, developed and delivered as part of a teaching team, lectures and tutorials on the postgraduate module BEMM178 Innovation Management. These lectures and tutorials address important emerging topics such as the 4th Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0) as well as more developed topics, including Open Innovation and Innovation Ecosystems.

Tausif is the convenor of the undergraduate module BEM3059 Circular Economy: Business and Enterprise, which focuses on key organisational and environmental aspects of circular economy. He is currently co-developing a postgraduate module on Innovation Policy.
