Atta has been a member of the Exeter Centre for Circular Economy (ECCE) since 2018 as a Research Associate, working on a variety of subjects including Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Material Flow Analysis (MFA), Stock assessment, GIS modelling, circularity assessment and value stream mapping.

Atta has been working at Exeter Business School, Centre for Circular Economy since 2018 as part of a 3 year, £1M UK Research and Innovation Council project to design Circular Economy (CE) systems in the built environment. He has been working on ‘The Regenerative Circular Economy for Buildings and Construction’ (REBUILD) project as a lead research associate since 2018. At this time REBUILD was the largest CE funded research project in the UK with an ambitious remit to address the challenge and opportunity of reclaim, remanufacture and re-use of structural building materials in new builds, that had previously been considered too complex, too expensive or technically impossible with damaging the product [Grant number: EP/ P008917/1].

Atta’s role involves co-ordination of activities and outputs of two other teams at the University of Manchester and the University of Bradford who are developing novel and innovative engineering techniques to deconstruct steel, brick and concrete structural building components that form the highest proportion of end of life waste flows and have the highest embodied carbon of all building materials.

Prior to joining ECCE Atta worked as a visiting scholar the school of environment of the Tsinghua University in Beijing and as a research assistant at École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland.

Research projects

Atta have been lead or co-author of 7 peer reviewed papers in high impact journals (including Resources, Conservation and Recycling) and was an invited speaker at FutureBuild 2019 in London.

He lead co-ordinator for an International Conference on Construction Circular Economy in 2019 in Manchester where over 50 experts in circular economy of the built environment participated [tinyurl.com/yxk37pvz].

Moreover, provided evidence to the UK Government Department DEFRA consultation in 2019, which addressed the obstacles to implementing reuse of construction materials in the UK. A report was prepared and, based on a holistic multi-scenario analysis, concluded that an increase in the proportion of construction materials reused would have a very significant impact in reducing construction and demolition waste, while also decreasing the carbon footprint dramatically.

Atta have presented research findings at the ‘Buildings As Material Banks’ (BAMB) conference 2019 (Brussels), EcoBalance 2018 (Tokyo) and presented my work at 3 international SETAC conferences in 2015, 2016 and 2018.
