Transitions to University: A Creative Workshop
Thursday 12th November 2015, 09.30-11.00am, 12.00-3.30pm
This FREE creative workshop took place as part of the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Festival of Social Science, which ran between 9th and 13th November 2015. The Festival aims to illustrate how social science research can have real, impactful significance for everyone.
This entertaining and participative workshop aimed to help students explore the challenges they experience as they consider a possible transition from A levels to Higher Education. It immersed students in a campus learning experience, and drew on innovative methods, informed by research on the development of leadership skills and resilience in transition.
During the 90-minute session, students were briefly introduced to the research (on leadership and liminal transition), which informed this workshop. They then worked in groups to create representations of the symbolic monsters that lurk at various points in their experience of transition through A level, to ‘infinity and beyond’. In the second part of the workshop, students co-created a map through transition, which identified and illustrated how these monsters can be overcome.
The event was well attended by local A level students from various schools in Devon. It was designed and delivered by Dr Beverley Hawkins, Senior Lecturer in Leadership and Organisation Studies at the University of Exeter Business School.
