Managing Around the World: International Roundtables for Practising Managers

This year saw students from South Africa, France, Slovenia, UK and Mexico attend the RoundTables for Practising Mangers at Univeristy College Dublin in May.

Join a group of international practising managers to engage with their current management issues. Share, reflect and take action to understand and improve your business performance.

Managing Around the World is a one-week module designed to explore how things get done in a cross-cultural world, and how to work more effectively. Participants and faculty collaborate in a structured process of analysis, representation, and friendly consulting.

The programme is in 3 parts: the purpose and nature of managerial work; field visits to local companies; and application to your own circumstances.

In order to get the most from the Roundtable process, you need to have a managerial presence in organisational life, so you can test and develop experience with colleagues in senior management roles from different parts of the world. 

The one week module features:

  • Thought-provoking debate and focused enquiry into your own organisation

Jonathan Gosling is Professor Emeritus of Leadership Studies at Exeter University and also also a visiting Professor at Renmin University of China (in the department of Management Philosophy). He was co-founder of the One Planet MBA and is Lead Faculty with the Forward Institute in the UK.

He works with talented researchers, consultants and organisational insiders to collectively make a significant impact on both the understanding and practice of leadership in contexts as varied as malaria elimination, national defence, food supply chains, small business development. He has published several books and many articles on these topics - most recently about how people use power - for good and ill - based on a study of Napoleon Bonaparte.

Cleghorn Professor of Management at McGill University, Henry Mintzberg is a leading expert on managing, organising and strategy. From 1991 to 1999, he was a visiting professor at INSEAD, France.

Author of many books and articles, in 2004 he published a critical analysis of modern management education, advocating for more emphasis on enabling practicing managers to rely upon action learning and insights from their own experience.

Henry then co-founded and is a key faculty member of the innovative ‘Roundtables for Practicing Managers’ programme which complements One Planet module, ‘ Managing around the World’ and gives MBA students from across the globe an opportunity to come together and reflect on their management experience and the cultural differences inherent in how managers perform and get things done.

Born and raised in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, Dr. Ian Sutherland is Deputy Dean for Research and Director of PhD Studies at IEDC–Bled School of Management in Slovenia.

An internationally recognized expert at the intersection of arts and business, Dr. Sutherland was originally trained as a professional musician. He holds B.Mus. (Hons) and M. Mus. Degrees from the School of Music of Memorial University (Canada) and a PhD in Sociology and Philosophy from the University of Exeter (UK).

Today he has an active international career as a researcher, educator and consultant combining expertise in sociology, philosophy, creativity and leadership studies. In addition to his position at IEDC-Bled School of Management, he is also an Adjunct Professor of Leadership at the Warsaw University of Technology Business School, Fellow of the School of Graduate Studies of Memorial University, and Fellow of the Peter Pribilla Stiftung – Technische Universität München.

A sought after speaker and facilitator he has delivered courses, workshops, seminars and lectures in over 20 countries around the world. As a consultant and organizational development practitioner he has worked with companies in the pharmaceuticals, consumer electronics, telecommunications, financial services, manufacturing and defense industries. 

Daniel Arturo Heller is Professor of Strategy and Inter-Organizational Relations at Yokohama National University.

He was born in Cali, Colombia and raised in the United States. He did his undergraduate studies at Williams College and received a doctorate in economics from the University of Tokyo in 2007. His current research focus is on the system-integrating role of production engineering in automotive new product development.

His work has appeared in the International Journal of Computer Integrated Manufacturing, International Journal of Automotive Technology and Management, and Hitotsubashi Business Review. His first book, Can both competitiveness and profitability be sustained? An analysis of the long-term performance of Japanese automakers was published in Japanese in 2013.
