Derek Salkeld

Derek is a part-time PhD student within ISR and researching the theory of costing projects, the mathematical evaluation of risk in business cases for projects and the reasons for the scarcity of historical project cost data. He is a graduate physicist and chartered electrical engineer. He has been a risk analyst for twenty years and has extensive experience of multi-disciplinary engineering projects covering a wide range of assets.  Appointments include the assessment of Network Rail’s IT investment programme; the development of a whole life asset investment model of waste water treatment systems owned by the Water Service of Northern Ireland; the investment prioritisation model for British Energy’s power station fleet, and a review of the business case for the London Cross Rail urban rail system.  He is a risk analyst on the Cross London Rail Link project, where he is responsible for the analysis used to inform HM Treasury, the Department for Transport, and Transport for London about their investment decision. 

His academic interests are quantitative analysis, investment appraisal, business cases, the management of projects and the management of risk.
