Profile

Baz describes himself as a 'leadership consultant'. As an experienced director himself, he is able to give individual leaders, Boards and senior management teams both the hard skills to understand the context in which they lead and the soft skills to increase their impact and effectiveness to be more successful. With Masters degrees in both executive coaching (MSc) and business (MBA), he brings a practical and leadership development focus to his clients.

Career

Originally an electronics graduate, Baz moved from electrical and electronic engineering design roles into business development, commercial and marketing roles, and from there into three board level directorial positions. Having worked for British and US organisations, he has directly managed operations across Europe, Asia and America in both manufacturing and service industries. In 2003, he set up his own leadership consulting organisation, Starr Performance Limited.

Baz uses his previous senior leadership experience, and combines that experience with an MBA and an MSc in Coaching and Development, to work with clients on a variety of leadership focused developmental activities, from the Board room down.

Baz is able to give leaders and their teams both the hard skills to understand the context in which they lead and the soft skills to increase their impact and influence to be more successful in their individual and team roles. This involves executive coaching, team coaching, Board development, leadership gap analysis, mentoring, facilitation, consulting and training.

Baz works mostly with senior leaders and aspiring senior leaders: Chairs, CEOs and Directors as well as their teams around areas such as:

  • organisational development

Sectors

In the public sector, Baz is an executive coach on the National NHS Coaching Register and undertakes leadership development with Chief Executives, Chairs and Directors and their teams within Primary Care Trusts, Strategic Health Authorities and various hospital and ambulance trusts across the UK. He is also only one of ten members of the NHS Board Development register. He also has public sector experience working with the Department of Health and the Department of Work and Pensions. Baz also works in the private sector in large plcs such as BT and Virgin Media as well as in start-ups and SMEs. Charity / third sector work includes the RNLI and various other charitable organisations.

Tools

Baz uses a variety of tools as appropriate. He has the British Psychological Society's Level A and Level B+ qualifications and is accredited to administer the Baron EQi emotional intelligence tool. He is also accredited to use the Leadership Development Framework (ŠHarthill). For Boards and Teams, Baz uses both Board level and team development toolsets.

Personal statement

"It is difficult to convey how passionate I am about helping my clients become more effective in carrying out their often complex and ambiguous leadership roles and how much I enjoy the work I get asked to do. More and more this involves not just working with individual leaders, but their teams and whole Boards as well. I feel privileged to be asked to go on this journey with my clients and create with them the outcomes they require, often creating transformational change along the way - in me as well as the client!"

Research interests

At a group level, Baz is particularly interested in understanding the complex dynamics within Boards and how to make Boards more effective. At an individual level, he is researching into the impact of 'life stage' on the capacity of leaders to lead.
