The seminar will explore the largely positive reaction of employees to team working in three plants. Yet, alongside team working, managers simultaneously pursued other initiatives forming 'deadly combinations' of HR policies that undermined employees' overall job satisfaction. Reasons for managers pursuing the contradictory policies are examined. Such reasons are not adequately considered in the literature on High Performance Work Systems, nor the critical perspective on HRM, yet were central to understanding management initiatives and employee responses to those initiatives.
