Abstract
There are many ways to research and write about emotions in organizations. In this seminar I intend to talk about some of my own work on emotions over the past five years. During this time, my research and theory development has touched a number of themes including learning, leadership, paradox and institutional work. The underlying approach to all of these themes is informed by a psychodynamic or psychosocial perspective that is concerned with the continuous interplay between emotions and politics/ power relations in organizations. The focus of my work is less about the study of individuals’ emotions or attempts to manage emotion and more about collective emotional dynamics that both enable and restrict behaviour; and inform structures that define ‘the way we do things here’. A presentation of some of the ideas and concepts behind my own writing about emotions will hopefully stimulate broader associations and discussions around this fascinating and important area of research and scholarship.
