This talk reports a programme of ongoing research to explore effective ways for detecting deception during interviews, which has applicability in a range of criminal contexts including investigations of tax avoidance. The research challenges many assumptions about how deception can best be detected, notably the idea that one can passively observe behavioural signs of lying. Examples of deception detection through expert interviewing and investigation practices will be discussed.
