Business Leaders Forum
“Banks and the Crisis - was it anything new or had we seen this before?”
The University of Exeter recently hosted the first Business Leaders Forum event of 2015/16, focusing on Banks and the failures of 2007/8 which lead to the financial crisis - featuring John Sutherland, alumnus and Honorary Fellow of the Business School.
Sean Fielding, Director of Research and Knowledge Transfer at the University of Exeter, opened the proceedings, which took place at Holland Hall on Exeter’s Streatham campus. He introduced John, who is an Exeter alumnus (MBA Banking 1994, MA Leadership Studies 1996), as well as an Honorary Fellow of the Business School and currently works as a Senior Advisor at the Bank of England.
Using historical and contemporary sources and explaining in simple terms how banks go out of business, John discussed whether the bank failures of 2007/8 were due to new causes or whether the failures were simply a repeat of what has happened before. This was followed by an informative Q&A session in which many of the Forum’s members took part.
The Business Leaders Forum is a premier networking group for senior business people in the South West. It is aimed primarily at senior management and is a membership-based organisation that enables people to stay up-to-date with current trends in business. The Forum also provides an invaluable means of exchanging knowledge and developing ideas through business peers and leading academics.
The next Business Leaders Forum event takes on Monday December 14th 2015, and will explore the theme of Innovation in Big Data according to our three speakers, Dr Alberto Arribas (Informatics Lab at the Met Office), Mark Bainbridge (Black Swan), and Joss Langford (Coelition).
