Business internship puts graduate in the pink
Business School graduate Adam Zuber made his mark during his internship with Thomas Pink, when his suggestions became part of company policy. Adam proactively followed up with the CEO of Thomas Pink after he attended a Business School career talk. His initiative led to a valuable internship which set him up for later success in the job market.
Adam Zuber (Management and Leadership with European Study 2012) attended an ‘Insight into Retail Careers’ talk, run by the Business School careers team, in his final year at Exeter. Speaking was Business School alumnus Jonathan Heilbron, CEO of Thomas Pink, a leading international luxury clothing brand. Adam picked up a business card, and, having researched the company, speculatively emailed Jonathan, highlighting areas where he believed that he could benefit Thomas Pink.
Consequently, Jonathan decided to invite his senior team to bid for Adam’s time. Head of Retail for Europe Wissam Chahine successfully secured and offered Adam a two month internship at Thomas Pink headquarters in London.
Adam’s brief was to undertake a ‘made to order’ business project, which involved competitive analysis of the market position of their tailor-made shirt process. He achieved this by analysing sales trends, interviewing store managers and researching competitors’ services in order to improve the companies approach.
Within his report, which he presented to the Board of Directors, Adam mapped the full customer experience of buying tailor made shirts, from arriving at the shop to receiving the finished product. He then suggested how to streamline the customer experience by introducing new promotional ideas.
Jonathan Heilbron said Adam “identified huge potential in business.” Saying that after his internship, “opportunities and areas for development were realised.”
Jonathan (Economics & Politics, 1982) said that internships were a great way of introducing people to the world of business and identifying future employees.
“As a business and group we want to encourage young future talent.”
Adam’s internship gave him valuable experience of international business. Through it, he was able to translate academic skills into practical application which set him up for success in the job market. Today he works for Oracle and was recently promoted into a technology sales role focusing on Oracle’s Big Data & Analytics.
