The winning team from the Business School

Business School team triumphant for second year in CFA Research Challenge

A team of five students from the Business School has won the UK finals of the CFA Institute Research Challenge for the second year in a row.

The CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) Institute is the body which sets professional standards, exam qualifications and debate worldwide for financial and investment analysis. It operates Partnership Programmes with most of the world’s leading business schools, including Exeter. The CFA Institute Research Challenge is an annual global competition that provides university students with hands-on mentoring and intensive training in financial analysis. Students gain real-world experience as they assume the role of a research analyst and are tested on their ability to value a stock, write an initiation-of-coverage report, and present their recommendations.

Students work in teams to research and analyse a publicly traded stock. Each team produces a report on their assigned stock with a buy, sell, or hold recommendation and the selected finalists present and defend their thesis to a panel of experienced investment professionals.

Jamie Stevenson, lecturer at Xfi, said: “We have some extremely talented students here at the Business School and it was a great team to mentor. They worked very hard and were worthy winners of the UK finals. It’s a testament to the excellence of the Finance programmes at Exeter that we’ve been able to win this prestigious competition two years in a row.”

The winner from each local competition advances to one of the three regional competitions hosted by CFA Institute: in the Americas; the Asia Pacific; and the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) regions.

The winning team was Weilin Yin (FAFM), Bo Shen (FAFM), Roger Cao (Finance and Investment), Jing Yang (Accounting and Finance) and Yiyi Han (Finance and Investment). The team will now go on to compete in the EMEA finals of the competition in Milan on 1-2 April 2014.
