Chancellor launches new student society

The Chancellor of the University, Baroness Floella Benjamin OBE DL, Hon DLitt, gave an inspiring and passionate speech to students at the launch event of the new Exeter University Women in Business Society.

Floella, herself a businesswoman, encouraged female students to get the best out of people and their businesses saying: “everyone has the ability change the world.”

The event gave students the opportunity to ask Floella questions. Issues raised included how to best manage a successful career and a family and the biggest challenges facing women in business today.

The Chancellor has always been a supporter of equality in business, and spoke during the House of Lords’ International Women's Day Debate last March about the contribution that women have made to the UK's economy.

The new student society, set up by Business School student Manisha Patel, aims to support women in finding their feet in the male dominated business world by offering networking, speaker events and workshops. Through such events they hope to inspire leadership, highlight opportunities and nurture talent.

President Manisha Patel (Economics and Finance) said she hoped the society will “bridge the gap between the support the University offers students in their career exploration and the informal support students seek from each other.”

The society has already achieved sponsorship from Nomura and Accenture and hopes to build links with many other businesses as well as alumnae from all disciplines.
