Exeter Builds Reputation in Service Science

Dr Andi Smart, Senior Lecturer in Management will be Guest Editor for a special issue on service operations management for the prestigious International Journal of Operations and Production Management later this year. He is continuing the drive to raise the profile of service operations management, on the international stage, by coordinating a special track for the 3rd World Operations Management conference in Tokyo this August. These activities continue from his role on the European Operations Management Association (EUROMA) Board, where he has established the Service Operations Management Forum for European Members.

Dr Smart, Professor Roger Maull and Dr Irene Ng, form a research group at the School of Business and Economics that is committed to becoming an international centre of excellence in Service Operations Management. The group runs regular workshops on Service Science for academics and large service organizations, such as Lloyds TSB, Fidelity and Vodafone. The next meeting of the Service Science Forum is to be held at Fidelity International, 25 Cannon Street, London, on the 11th March.

This year the School launches the UK's first MSc in Service Science and Management, building upon its reputation and expertise in the area. This innovative programme will deliver new skills to large service organizations seeking to develop and transform their service provision capability to meet new challenges of the twenty-first century.

Dr Smart is currently on sabbatical writing a book on Service Systems; the interface between operations management, service management, and process management. He has an article on Business Process Management, forthcoming in the British Journal of Management, and is an External Examiner for the University of Glasgow.
