Module description


This 2nd year non-credit bearing module will help students on 'with Industrial Experience' programmes to prepare for their work placement that will take place during the third year of their degree.

The module follows from BSD1002’s placement searches to focus on developing application skills for the placement recruitment process and employability skills for success in the workplace.

There will be opportunities to continue to network with students who recently completed industrial placements and to engage with employers, with support from the Careers Team and wider “WIE” community.

Additional Information:


You can undertake a work placement in the UK, Europe or elsewhere in the world.  Overseas placements will be considered on a case-by-case basis.  All placements will need to be approved by the Business School.

External Engagement:

You can engage with leading graduate employers as part of optional events made available via the Careers Team and University Career Zone.


You will develop and apply employability skills through the module learning activities, by reflecting on your recruitment experiences and by participating in optional networking events.

Module aims

BSD2002 Career Management Skills for ‘With Industrial Experience students is a non-credit bearing module that aims to prepare students on ‘with Industrial Experience’ programmes for their extended placement in the third year of their degree.

The module aims to support students to develop:

  • Application skills needed for the placement recruitment process
  • Employability skills needed for success in the workplace

  • 1. examine the benefits of continuing personal and professional development in the workplace;
  • 2. identify employability skills (competencies) relevant to placement roles/organisations of interest;
  • 3. critically reflect on experiences that demonstrate relevant employability skills;

  • 4. understand the academic assessment requirements for the placement year;
  • 5. locate and interpret information sources to identify academic and employability skills development opportunities on your degree;
  • 6. locate and interpret information sources to identify career options where a degree in the subject area is essential/desirable/useful.

  • 7. recognise the impact behaviour, ethics and health & safety have in the workplace;
  • 8. identify personal skills needed to have impact and success in the recruitment process.

Re-assessment notes

This module is not formally assessed and is non-credit bearing, however compulsory sessions must be completed for progression.  Those students who fail to meet the requirements of the module without due cause will be transferred to the three year degree without WIE. 

Syllabus plan


Term 1 ~ 6 x 1 hour sessions:

A range of optional extra-curricular activities will be available to BSD2002 students including: careers fairs, employer presentations, skills sessions, mock interviews and assessment centres, alongside the YES pages ( and WIE community networking events.

The Employability Placement Advisers continue to offer support with: 1-1 appointments and ‘focus on’ workshops to help students progress in securing an industrial placement and to advise on CV, Applications and LinkedIn.
