Module description


The development of international trade is controlled by the management of international logistics and provision of the global supply chain. The ultimate objective of global supply chain management in a broad sense and global sourcing in a narrow sense is to link the market place, distribution network, manufacturing/processing/assembly processes and procurement activity in such a way that customers receive a higher level of service at lower cost. The rise of the global supply chain has introduced a new breed of management in a computer literate environment operating in a global infrastructure and raises questions around new business models, sustainability, ethics, sources of local supply and local economic development. The foci of this module will be on how multinational corporations manage their supply chains while implementing an internationalization strategy and using sustainability as a strategic leverage to penetrate into emerging markets and gain access to key supplies.


The module includes a wealth of well known Multinational Corporations (MNCs) cases regarding their global sourcing and sustainability practice in a foreign country.


This module focuses on sustainable practices in China with a dedicated lecture and tutorial and integrates ongoing research by the module leader on global sourcing and sustainability in the supply chain. 


The module provides you with a global view of supply chain management learning from the real examples of best practice of selected MNCs operating in emerging economies, which will assist in gaining employment.

Module aims

The aim of the module is therefore to introduce the practical and theoretical elements of global supply chain management of MNCs including global sourcing and international logistics. In particular, the module intends to introduce a set of new and emerging concepts and knowledge in global supply chain management and focus on the cross border context. The 11 lectures on the module are designed to enable participants to understand how MNCs as leaders of their supply chains in emerging economies, manage relational risk caused by cultural differences, use International Purchasing Offices (IPOs) to manage their supply base, help their supply chains members learn, integrate sustainability and innovate in their supply chains.

The module combines cases developed by the module leader and European Case Clearance House (ECCH) case studies, latest research findings and academic research papers, including two practical tutorials in class.

  • 2. interpret the cultural differences and similarities between China and the west and analyse how it could impact on the western buyer-Chinese supplier relationship and how both parties could adapt to each other

  • 4. identify the types of supply chain risk facing MNCs and apply risk mitigation strategies
  • 5. critically assess the leadership role and innovative approaches of MNCs in the dissemination of sustainable practice in emerging markets
  • 6. analyse and differentiate stakeholders of MNCs in emerging markets and their roles in relation to MNCs’ practice as non-traditional supply chain members
  • 7. critically appraise the sustainability strategies of MNCs in emerging markets

  • 9. apply appropriate theories and conceptual frameworks for developing sustainability and global sourcing strategies
