Research and Consultancy Project
Since all employers are keen to recruit graduates who are able to co-operate, solve problems and work in teams this module helps develop these particular skills via organised group work that is aimed towards achieving the common goal. As less hierarchical organisations have emerged with project teams, self-managed work teams and management teams, so the requirements to 'Get on well with people', and to 'Work with and through others' become increasingly important. In this module teamwork involves working confidently within a group, contributing your own ideas effectively, taking a share of the responsibility, being assertive - rather than passive or aggressive, accepting and learning from constructive criticism and giving positive, constructive feedback to others.
This is an exciting and challenging module which is designed to present you with real-life projects which will enable you to develop your understanding of the project management process along with a range of consultancy, research and problem solving skills.

The module will be delivered through a series of keynote lectures and seminar sessions. Lectures will be used to deliver new material to you but will be interactive and you will be expected to debate key themes introduced in these lectures. Support sessions will be arranged with a nominated supervisor to guide you through the process of applying research and consultancy theory and to assist you in the management of your consultancy 'teams'. These will take place instead of seminars and, sometimes, these sessions may also take the guise of 'client' updating meetings. You will be provided with opportunities to draw upon practical examples of real-life research and consultancy projects. Additionally, you will have access to academic staff with personal research and consultancy management expertise.
This module is about consulting and managing projects, therefore:
• Lectures provide you with a generic overview of the project management process
• Seminars will focus on projects in the specific vocational areas
• Seminars will/may not re-cover lecture content, only apply it
• Seminar tutors will expect you to have attended lectures
In addition this module provides you with an opportunity to design implement and evaluate a practical project within your sector.
All students will be required to participate in class discussions, industry sectors research, decision making and collaborative classroom based group work, and as a result are expected to develop a range of desired employability skills that include: critical thinking and strategic problem solving, team work, and planning and organisation.
Critical thinking and strategic problem solving skills - Students will be working toward achieving problem solving and decision-making skills that will increase their employability potential and prepare them for business world via series of theoretical strategic management theories and their own individual research of the industry as a whole and the specific industry sector. Since problem-solving often involves decision-making, and decision-making is especially important for management and leadership students are expected to develop strategic planning techniques during their work in class and while researching vide range of available sources that will improve their decision-making and the quality of these decisions. This will include a creative technique well known as 'Logic Tree-Based Problem Solving' method that allows a detailed exploration of any decision-making scenario, outlining potential outcomes. By using flowcharts students will follow each small step in the logic tree and sort out branches into more specific responses to the problem until they arrive at a set of satisfactory responses based upon situation-specific variables. In addition to being a teaching tool, a problem-solving tree allows each student to become an independent learner while conduct their own research. Students are expected to use an easy-to-follow flowchart that will allow them to solve problems in the way business management wants without having to consult a supervisor directly. This is a powerful tool, in both a small business setting and a large organisation where each staff member needs to be as independently effective as possible.

Planning and organisation- Students are expected to demonstrate their flexibility, organisation and commitment to their peers and module team by completing their tasks on time, being punctual, showing excellent attention to details in their work and effectively manage their own time and resources when planning and managing their work load. Furthermore, students will be faced with various challenges during their study and are expected to implement changes and set new criteria to the given tasks.
