Module description

This is a practical module that will provide students with fundamental skills for managing projects. It also provides an introduction to managing multiple or programmes of projects. The module consists of traditional lectures, practical tutorials and also guest lectures from professional project managers who will cover a range of typical project scenarios. Students will develop project management skills whilst preparing their group project (working in small groups) and will be expected to present a professional project management plan toward the end of the course. This module is continuously assessed with two key pieces of work contributing all of the marks toward the final assessment.

Additional Information:

Sustainability – The effective management of scarce resources is at the heart of sustainable thinking and the ability to effectively manage resources is at the heart of good project management. This module uses a number of real case studies and considers their impact on the environment and references them against the sustainability agenda accordingly.

Employability – This module is aimed at providing participants with a number of key skills that employers value highly. Project management skills transgress all sectors, all industries and all areas of the world – the ability to manage time, cost and quality is an essential skill for any employee.

Internationalisation – The cases for this module are carefully selected to represent both domestic and international projects taken from China, the Middle East and Europe accordingly.

Module aims

To equip the students with a practical appreciation of the role that project and programmes of projects occupy within businesses and commercial organisations.
To enable the students to competently and confidently participate in a given project role.
To provide a number of key Project Management skills relating to planning, resource control and risk management that will allow them to operate effectively and efficiently in a project environment.

  • 1. appropriately apply relevant project management tools and formulate an appropriate management plan for any project.
  • 2. demonstrate a solid comprehension of the key documents and processes employed in managing professional projects (such as Defining Objectives, Project Initiation Documentation [PID], ERP & Workflow Charts etc) by preparing a project proposal.
  • 3. apply relevant project management tools (such as Work Breakdown Planning, Gantt Chart Time Planning, Critical Path Analysis, Resource Allocation Charts and Risk Assessment).

ILO: Discipline-specific skills

  • 4. adopt a project orientated approach to managing a programme of related activities.
  • 5. explain the project constraints of Time, Cost & Quality and demonstrate an ability to critically review projects according to performance against these constraints.
  • 6. compare and contrast different project management methodologies (such as PRiNCE, EPM, ERP etc) paying particular attention to; Resource Planning, resource management and Risk Assessment.

  • 7. recount the typical roles within a project team.
  • 8. display professional communication skills, time and workload management.
  • 9. use judgement to consider professional responsibility and a “risk-orientated” outlook.
