“I was given real responsibilities from day one and have been encouraged during my time at UBS to learn and do more. I have taken bags of knowledge, skills and connections out of this placement, much more than I expected at the beginning.”
Anna Uzunova, UBS
BA Business and Management with Industrial Experience
Anna stayed pro-active throughout her placement at UBS, pushing herself to accomplish more than was expected of her, and enjoying the range of responsibilities she was given.
“I chose to study Business and Management, after having completed a foundation degree at Exeter, as the course covers a variety of management modules and has great flexibility, meaning that I could alter it according to my interests and needs. The University of Exeter Business School is also highly respected by employers and has outstanding academic personnel, as well as studying facilities.
For my placement year, I was working in Human Resources at UBS. Among all the HR placements available to apply for, this one stood out as it offered an opportunity to take on a lot of responsibility.
My role involved supporting a senior HR Business Partner on strategic matters to the business. On a day to day basis I produced reports and analysed data regarding compensation reviews, talent reviews and promotion reviews, communicating information to HR management and internal clients. I also supported the strategic recruitment function with researching information on the candidates.
In terms of skills, I have significantly improved my communication skills, my ability to work under pressure and my analytical skills. I have also developed an understanding of how a Global Financial Services organisation operates, particularly regarding investment banking, wealth management and asset management, learning how they provide their services to clients.
This experience has helped me confirm to myself that a career in HR is the career path I want to pursue. I have managed to develop a solid understanding of different teams within the HR function in a financial services organisation, which will help me make more informed career decisions after graduation.
I was given real responsibilities from day one and have been encouraged during my time at UBS to learn and to do more. I have taken bags of knowledge, skills and connections out of this placement, much more than I expected at the beginning.
My advice to other students looking to do an industrial placement is to be prepared for a competitive process and use it as a learning experience, don’t give up looking if you really want the job. I attended many activities organised by the Careers Team such as mock interviews and CV and application reviews, they helped me tremendously when applying for my placement. During the placement, stay proactive and try your best – aim to accomplish more than what would be expected of an intern.”
