Navigating Leadership Challenges in the Bank of England – Exeter Leaders Forum, 13th December

The first Exeter Leaders Forum event of 2017-2018 was held at Reed Hall where the Exeter Centre for Leadership hosted our guest speaker, Joanna Place. Joanna is currently the Chief Operating Officer at the Bank of England, after previously holding a variety of roles within the bank including Head of Monetary & Statistics, Director of Business Change and Executive Director of Human Resources, giving her a wealth of knowledge and experience.

Joanna shared her experiences with forum members as she addressed navigating the obstacles faced in leadership and some of the leadership challenges in her role at the Bank of England, before opening the floor to questions.

In attendance were a variety of organisational members including from the Royal Marines, the NHS, Exeter City Council and some of the University of Exeter’s top academic staff, including Pro-Vice Chancellor & Executive Dean of the Business School, Professor David Bruce Allen, Director of Executive Education and Lecturer in management Dr Bill Russell, Director of Innovation, Impact and Business, Sean Fielding and Professor of Organisational Behaviour and HR Management, Ilke Inceoglu.

Over an informal and tasty dinner, members were split into discussion groups to debate some thought-provoking questions:

  • How does social media change the game for leaders?
  • What set of core values might leaders share?
  • What makes women better leaders?

Once regrouped, thoughts and feedback were shared alongside an insightful summary from Professors Will Harvey and Ruth Sealy, both Co-Directors of the Exeter Centre for Leadership.

The Exeter Leaders Forum is hosted by the Exeter Centre for Leadership at the University of Exeter Business School, aimed at leaders and aspiring leaders in the South West.
