The Independent Director: The Non-Executive Directors Guide to Effective Board Presence

The third Business Leaders Forum event of 2015/16 saw alumnus Gerry Brown (Economics and Economic History 1966), Chairman of Novaquest Management, present on the good, the bad and the ugly involved in the role of the Independent Director.

Gerry discussed content from his new book, 'The Independent Director: The Non-Executive Directors Guide to Effective Board Presence’, which aims to give insight into what it is like to be an Independent Chairman and Director, the contributions made to companies and the challenges faced in these roles. Gerry focused on the good, the bad and the ugly of this role, which sparked an interesting discussion from guests, both before and after dinner.

Gerry is current chair of the University Campaign Board and also a member of the University Council.  Gerry and his wife, Clemencia Posada-Brown, established the Ayudar Colombia Fund in 2013.  The Fund provides scholarships for Colombian citizens to study on the University's exclusive One Planet MBA programme and its Masters in Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture, as well as providing funding for student and academic exchange between Exeter and Colombian universities.

Richard Owen, Interim Pro Vice Chancellor and Executive Dean at the University of Exeter Business School, hosted the dinner event at Holland Hall on Exeter’s Streatham campus. Guests, including Business Leaders Forum members, Academic University Staff and Corporate Partners, who networked with refreshments before being seated for a 2-course dinner, a presentation from Gerry and an interactive Q&A session.
