“It is all about adapting to new situations and the structure of the modules at Exeter gave me the skills to do this easily”
Jo Goodall, Deloitte
Strategy & Operations consultant, Deloitte
While studying for a BA in Business and Management, Jo used the Careers Service at the University of Exeter to steer her career into the right direction.
Why did you choose to study here?
I have family connection with the area but also the course sounded really interesting when I visited on an open day. I didn't know what career I wanted after University but enjoyed running my own business at school so I thought it would be useful to learn more of the theoretical side of business to be able to use that in practice.
The course covered many different aspects of business so gave me a good grounding in accounting, marketing, strategy, technology etc.
What did you enjoy most about studying here?
A lot of group work and practical presentation work was fun, as it reflected what work is like in real life (not that I knew that at the time!). The teaching staff were all welcoming and friendly and the campus facilities were excellent.
Did you use the Careers Service while you were at Exeter?
Yes to give me ideas of what career I wanted to pursue and then for help on writing my CV and tailoring it for different job applications.
What have you been doing since leaving Exeter, and what are you doing now?
I joined Deloitte UK in the September following graduation and have been there ever since. I work in Strategy & Operations Consulting, focusing mainly on Finance. I have also been studying for my CIMA qualification and qualified in July 2015
What do you enjoy most about your work?
Work in Consulting is very varied which is what I enjoy most about it. It is all project based so you could be on a project for a few weeks or a couple of years! Consulting has allowed me to work with many different private and public sector clients so I have been able to see how different businesses operate their organisations, which is really interesting to see. I enjoy the travel aspect of Consulting - you never know where your next project might be based so you have to be flexible and adaptable. Working at Deloitte has allowed me to work with very like-minded people who are all determined and ambitious, so it is enjoyable working in that kind of atmosphere.
How have your University of Exeter studies helped in your career?
The practical side, team working and giving presentations really set me up well for a career in Consulting because you are constantly put in new teams and are having to work with different people. It is all about adapting to new situations and I think the structure of the modules at Exeter gave me the skills to do this easily.
Do you have any advice for current students wishing to pursue your career?
Get a wide range of work experience - I didn’t have any Consulting specific experience before joining Deloitte but I did have various experiences from elsewhere. This shows you are a rounded person and can adapt to new situations quickly
What are your plans for the future?
Having recently qualified as a Chartered Management Accountant now is a good time to assess future plans, but currently my plan is to continue in Management Consulting.
