Sally joined the Business School in 2011 with twenty years’ experience in international sustainable development. She has worked for international organizations in research, policy, and programme roles, and has field experience in Asia, Africa and Western Europe. Her research interests lie in areas of the contested transition to a sustainable economy, sustainability-oriented innovation in business, and innovations inspired by nature.

She is currently a senior member of, and on the Steering Group of the EU/ABIS Marie Curie Initial Training Network exploring ‘Innovating for Sustainability’ (I4S), collaborating with eight Universities, from across Europe, and one from South Africa.

Sally is an author of a systematic review of the academic literature on sustainability-oriented innovation, commissioned by Network for Business Sustainability (NBS), which has generated several executive reports and papers.  She co-founded the Business School’s ‘Sustainable Innovation Lab’, and worked with colleagues deliver multi-stakeholder labs exploring how sustainability is driving innovation and creating new forms of value.

Previously she co-founded and worked as the Programme Director of the Green Economy Coalition, which  includes over 20 international environmental, development, trade union, consumer, business and reporting organisations, working together to accelerate the transition to an equitable and green economy. Before that she developed and coordinated IUCN’s global and regional policy dialogues on the Future of Sustainability.

Sally teaches two modules on the One Planet MBA: Prepare for Change, and Biomimicry and Business. She supervises PhD and MBA dissertations; and participates in the international One Planet Sustainability Challenge.  She co-authored Transition to Sustainability: Towards a Humane and Diverse World with Professor Bill Adams from the University of Cambridge (2008), and Linking Conservation and Poverty Reduction. Landscapes, People and Power (2008) with IUCN colleagues. Sally has worked on sustainable development for many international organisations including CARE International; DFID; ECE; IIED; ILO; IUCN; ISD; FAO; UNRISD; and WWF International.

Sally’s current research interests include sustainability-oriented innovation, business innovations inspired by nature, and more recently the inner dimensions of social change. She is a member of the Research Cluster: Sustainable and Circular Economy. She continues to research topics such as the scale of global sustainability challenges; contested environmental narratives; ecological design frameworks; green economy and public policy; poverty eradication and conservation; and institutional change. She supervises PhD and post graduate student dissertation and projects on business and sustainability themes.
