Building:One, University of Exeter, Rennes Drive, Exeter, EX4 4ST, UK

Christina Öberg is a research fellow at the Centre for Innovation and Service Research. She obtained her PhD in industrial marketing from Linköping University, Sweden. Her PhD project concerned how customer relationships affect and are affected by mergers and acquisitions. Prior to her PhD, Christina worked in the industry for eight years in such positions as financial manager and consultant. The companies that she has worked for include a publicly listed Swedish investment company and a privately held multinational language school. She founded her own consultancy firm in 2005 and has also conducted consultancy work for PriceWaterhouseCoopers.

Following her PhD, she became a lecturer at Linköping University and then Lund University, Sweden. Her research focus increasingly came to concern innovations related to customers, networks and ownership changes. She has also conducted research on sustainability. In 2012, she was appointed a reader (docent) at Lund University. Christina has been a visiting researcher at University of Bath, Manchester Business School, and National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan.

Her recent research projects have included the separation of companies, initiatives to commercialise medicine-technological research innovations, and acquisitions among project-based firms. The research has been funded by different Swedish research bodies, including Riksbanken.

Research

Research interests

  • Business networks
  • Innovation management
  • Mergers and acquisitions

In industrial markets, companies are expected to commit into long-term relationships with one another. Within these relationships, they adapt to the other party’s processes, while developing new ideas and improving interaction. Each company commits into several such relationships and together they constitute a business network of firms.

Changes in networks would result from how a company decides to change its position or how other network parties act or interact. Mergers and acquisitions in business networks highlight unforeseeable effects on business relationships and become a means to study how a company that aims to reposition itself impact present network structures.

Studies related to this area include research on perception in networks, and gaps between goals of interacting actors. In studies on acquisitions of innovative firms, focus has been placed on how the innovativeness of such firms shifts when their network changes, and differences in expectations between acquirers and the acquired firms.
