Alessandro Lomi was appointed Distinguished Research Professor at the University of Exeter Business School in 2019. He is currently a professor at the University of Italian Switzerland in Lugano, where he is a member of the Institute of Computational Science (ICS).  During the period 2016-18 he was a Visiting Scientist at the ETH Zürich, Department of Humanities, Social and Political Sciences. During the period 2008-16 Professor Lomi was a Conseiller a la Recherche in the Human and Social Sciences Division of the Conseil national de la recherche Suisse (Swiss NSF) in Bern, where he also served as vice-Chairperson of the SNSF Interdisciplinary Research Commission.

In 2013, Professor Lomi was elected Life Member of Clare Hall College, University of Cambridge, where, he had been  Research Fellow since 2012.  In 2011 he was awarded the Banco Santander Cátedra de Excelencia (Chair of Excellence) Professorship at the Universidad Carlos III, Madrid (Spain).  In 2008 he was Jemolo Research Fellow at Nuffield College, University of Oxford (UK).  Since 2007 Professor Lomi has been Honorary Senior Research Fellow in the School of Psychological Sciences of the University of Melbourne. In 2002-03 he was N.A.T.O. Senior Research Fellow at the Santa Fe Institute (Santa Fe, New Mexico), where he had been working since 2001 as research associate in the Evolution of States and Markets program directed by Professor John Padgett (University of Chicago).

In the less recent past, he was a professor of Organizational Theory and Behaviour at the University of Bologna (Italy),  an assistant professor of Organizational behaviour at the London Business School (UK), a visiting scholar at the Haas Business School (UC Berkeley) and at the Stern School of Business (New York University).
