Athena Swan

What is Athena Swan?

The Athena Swan Charter is a framework which is used across the globe to support and transform gender equality within higher education (HE) and research. Established in 2005 to encourage and recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) employment, the Charter is now being used across the globe to address gender equality more broadly, and not just barriers to progression that affect women.

The Athena Swan Charter:

  • Helps institutions achieve their gender equality objectives.
  • Assists institutions to meet equality legislation requirements, as well as the requirements and expectations of some funders and research councils.
  • Uses a targeted self-assessment framework to support applicants identify areas for positive action, as well as recognise and share good practice.
  • Supports the promotion of inclusive working practices that can increase the retention of valued academics and professional and support staff, demonstrating an institution’s commitment to an equitable working environment.

A Bronze Award for the School in 2021

In 2021 the School’s commitment to improving gender equality was recognised with an Athena Swan Bronze Award.

The award, conferred by the educational charity Advance HE, reflects the School’s success in achieving greater representation of women among its staff and students, and in addressing the barriers to progression that disproportionately affect women.

Key commitments within the School:

  • Creating an inclusive work culture in which we take a proactive role in supporting all genders.
  • Supporting all staff to progress in their careers and be recognised regardless of gender; to take positive action to tackle inequalities where they exist.
  • Engaging with the student community to ensure we understand and address gender equality throughout their University career from widening participation and application through to their degree programme to final outcomes.
  • Regularly checking our progress and success and holding ourselves to account where improvements are required; sharing progress with our community.

Governance within the School

As a result of the School’s Bronze Award c.45 actions were identified and formed the foundation of the School’s 5-year Action Plan.

Operationally the Action Plan is managed by the School’s Self-Assessment Team (SAT) and formally reports to the School’s Leadership Team (SLT) termly.  The SAT also reports to the School’s Inclusivity Group (SIG) via the Gender Theme Lead, who also holds the post of SAT chair.  If you have a enquiry or would like to make an observation for discussion at the next SAT meeting, you can submit an anonymous request via this form.
